When the original Top Gun debuted in theaters in 1986, it catapulted Tom Cruise to stardom, but another important aspect of the film was its soundtrack, which is still remembered today. The songs “Danger Zone” by Kenny Loggins, “Take My Breath Away” by Berlin, and “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling” by The Righteous Brothers have all been associated with the successful film. So it was critical for Lady Gaga’s big hit to land in the sequel, Top Gun: Maverick. Her song has a double meaning, as the film’s principal composer has revealed.
Top Gun: Maverick’s main song “Hold My Hand,” which plays during the movie and was also incorporated into the score, was written and performed by Lady Gaga. Harold Faltermeyer, Lady Gaga, and Hans Zimmer composed the music, which was produced by Lorne Balfe. When it came to the film’s soundtrack, Balfe had this to say about Gaga’s standout track:
Lady Gaga’s song was used as a subject for numerous meanings inside the film, according to the composer, who has previously worked on recent Mission: Impossible films and Black Widow, among other huge action pictures. On the one side, it’s about romantic love, and on the other, it’s about the love of flying and the dedication to the profession that Top Gun exemplifies.

According to Lady Gaga, who announced on Instagram in April that she spent a lot of time “perfecting” the emotive power ballad, it took her years to write. It was a “love message to the globe during and after a really difficult moment,” she said. When Tom Cruise heard the song, the singer assuaged his concerns about the sequel’s ability to breathe alongside the original soundtrack, as the Top Gun star confessed.
Since collaborating on the soundtrack for Top Gun: Maverick, Tom Cruise and Lady Gaga have reportedly become close. Last month, Cruise, for example, attended one of Gaga’s gigs. Twenty One Pilots’ Tyler Joseph recently disclosed that the alternative rock band was working on a song for the film before being sacked.
