Cameron Diaz is returning to the screen after a decade away, starring in Netflix’s Back in Action.
Diaz was one of the most bankable movie actresses in the 1990s and 2000s, thanks to her breakout appearance in The Mask alongside Jim Carrey. This led to major film roles such as Natalie Cook in the Charlie’s Angels films and Fiona in the Shrek franchise. Diaz went on to become one of the best comic actors of the day, appearing in such films as There’s Something About Mary, What Happens in Vegas, and Bad Teacher.
Jamie Foxx persuaded Diaz to return to the spotlight and co-star in Back in Action alongside him, and it didn’t appear to be a difficult feat. “Cameron is such an incredible force and she has done so much in this business,” Foxx recalled thinking about how to pitch the film to her. We adore her. We have to be pretty creative in terms of, you know, bringing her back” (via HuffPost). Foxx simply inquired of Diaz.

Foxx claims he just asked Diaz, “‘Do you want to have some fun?'” Simply have some fun!’ And I believe that is what drew her to it.” Foxx has aided Diaz in navigating the transition from retirement to stardom. When Diaz was unsure how to announce her comeback to the spotlight, Foxx organized a phone call with Tom Brady, who says he’s “relatively successful at un-retiring.” Foxx even tweeted a portion of the phone discussion.
Why Did Cameron Diaz Stop Acting For A Decade?
Diaz announced his retirement in 2014 for a variety of reasons. The most important thing to Diaz was that she wanted to focus on her family and raising her children, but she was also tired of the lifestyle. Diaz discussed her retirement frankly in 2017 (via Insider), saying, “I just went, ‘I can’t really say who I am to myself,’ which is a hard thing to face up to.” I felt compelled to complete myself.” The performer also admitted that two decades of touring had been stressful, and it’s not surprising that she felt this way in 2014 after releasing three films in a row.
However, as many great actors have returned after retirement, like Joe Pesci, Ke Huy Quan, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Daniel Day-Lewis, who coincidentally returned to acting to co-star in Gangs of New York with Diaz. Diaz has now been added to that list, and it won’t be a one-and-done deal, as Diaz will reprise her role as Fiona in Shrek 5. Though it may be a voice-only role, Cameron Diaz’s love of acting is likely to have been renewed by Back in Action.
