Jay-Z had something to say about The Recording Academy when accepting the Dr. Dre Global Impact Award at the Grammys last night.
During his address, Jay-Z mentioned DMX’s lack of nominations, as well as Beyoncé’s absence of an Album of the Year award after winning 32 Grammys. “DMX released two albums in 1998, both of which peaked at number one, yet he received no nominations. So I boycotted and watched the Grammys. I’m just saying, we want you to get it right,” the rapper stated.

He subsequently focused his attention on his wife, Beyoncé. “I don’t want to embarrass this young girl, but she has the most Grammys of anyone and has never won Album of the Year. So even by your own standards, that does not work,” Jay-Z added. This year, Harry Styles’ Harry’s House won the Album of the Year prize over Renaissance.
“Some of you will go home tonight feeling like you have been robbed. Some of you may be robbed. Some of you do not belong in this category. When I am nervous, I speak the truth. You have to keep showing up. Until they give you all the recognition you believe you deserve. Until they call you chairman. Until someone calls you a genius. “Until they call you the greatest of all time,” he said, concluding his statement. “You feel me?”

Jay-Z and Kanye West are tied for the most Grammy awards in history, at 24 each. They are both outshined by Beyoncé, who has 32 wins despite not winning album of the year. While Jay-Z’s comments are a well-known critique of The Recording Academy, which has forced some musicians to boycott, they are also reminiscent of Kanye’s interruption of Taylor Swift at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards.
“Yo Taylor, I’m extremely glad for you, and I’ll let you finish. But Beyoncé had one of the greatest videos of all time!” The rapper informed Swift, who was 19 at the time. The camera moved to Beyoncé, who mouthed, ‘Oh Kanye.’
