Lexus and UPTOWN magazine have announced the return of Lexus UPTOWN Honors Hollywood.
A highly anticipated event that will recognize cultural innovators in film and television who have positively impacted the portrayal of Black people through their remarkable contributions to the entertainment industry. The event will be held on Wednesday, March 6 at 7:00 p.m. at the Sunset Room in Hollywood.
During the height of awards season, this meeting highlights creatives who are frequently neglected and may otherwise be excluded from obtaining recognition for their achievements.
“Lexus UPTOWN Honors Hollywood is a celebration of excellence, resilience, and creativity,” explained David Telfer, Lexus’ senior manager of advertising and communications. “This year’s awards are especially important as we laud these often unsung icons who persist in the business and continue to create inclusive, empowering, and relevant content for today’s audiences.”
Lexus UPTOWN Honors Hollywood confirms Lexus and UPTOWN magazine’s commitment to amplifying diverse voices and celebrating the rich tapestry of talent in the Black creative community.
Among the prominent awardees include:
Niecy Nash is a popular figure in the entertainment world. She rose to prominence after playing Deputy Raineesha Williams on the television show “Reno 911” in 2003. Nash is a multi-talented individual with experience as an actor, playwright, producer, and director. She just received a Primetime Emmy Award for her outstanding portrayal as Glenda Cleveland in the Netflix film “Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story.” Nash will receive the Stephen F. Kolzak Award at the forthcoming GLAAD Media Awards presentation in Los Angeles in March.
Kim Fields is an actor, director, and producer. She began acting at the age of five and is best known for her performances in iconic television shows such as “The Facts of Life” and “Living Single.” Over the years, she has broadened her skills to include directing and producing. She recently used such skills, in addition to portraying the female protagonist, in the popular Netflix comedy “The Upshaws”.
Tisha Campbell, a Hollywood powerhouse, began her career as a young performer. This year celebrates 50 years in business. She is noted for her versatility and triple threat status as an actor, singer, and dancer. Her most well-known part is as “Gina” in the landmark blockbuster television series “Martin,” as well as roles in the classic films “School Daze” and “Boomerang.”
Essence Atkins has had a successful career as an actor, beginning as a teenager on television shows like “The Cosby Show” and “Family Matters.” She has subsequently become a well-known performer, leaving an indelible mark on the business with parts in sitcoms such as “Half & Half” and “Marlon.”
Gina Prince-Bythewood, an American film director and screenwriter, has had a huge impact on the film industry with her works “Love & Basketball,” “The Secret Life of Bees,” and “The Woman King.” The latter film received her Best Director nominations at the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards and the British Academy Film Awards in 2022. Her most recent endeavor is the television series “Genius: MLK/X,” which she worked on with her husband, Reggie Rock Bythewood.
Reggie Rock Bythewood is a great writer, producer, and director. He is noted for stretching the frontiers of storytelling that portrays Black culture through his work on TV shows like “New York Undercover,” “Notorious,” and “Swagger.” He recently partnered with his wife, Gina Prince-Bythewood, on “Genius: MLK/X,” an eight-part series about civil rights heroes Martin Luther King and Malcolm X.
These outstanding people have not only lasted the test of time, but have also helped shape the landscape of film and television, notably by advocating for positive depiction of Black people on screen.
The invitation-only event, scheduled during Oscar week, will take place on Wednesday, March 6, at the Sunset Room, 1439 N. Ivar Ave., Los Angeles, CA. The festivities will begin with the red carpet opening at 6:00 p.m., followed by the main event at 7:00 p.m. An exclusive after-party will take place from 9:30 to 11:00 p.m.
