They say you learn something new every day, and Shaggy’s authentic voice is today’s surprise lesson.
Shaggy, the Jamaica-born musician, is known for his deep, husky voice and thick Jamaican accent, but it turns out he’s been tricking us all along.
The singer, real name Orville Richard Burrell CD, is most known for singles such as ‘Boombastic’, ‘Angel’, and ‘It Wasn’t Me’. He sounds nothing like his apparent music character in real life.
Despite working in the music industry for decades, some people (myself included) are only now discovering what the 55-year-old genuinely sounds like.

In a TikTok video, Shaggy discusses where the inspiration for his unusual sounding voice originated from.
“I got this voice by mocking drill instructors in the military,” he explained in the now-viral video posted to his TikTok channel.
“In the Marines, the drill instructors would go ‘yeah boy, just drop and gimme’ 20, let’s go boy’, and I would mock him as a form of joking because, you know, it motivated your platoon.”
Shaggy sings in that voice just because he likes the sound of it.
He went on to say: “I just sang in that voice because it sounded cool, and all of a sudden ‘Oh Carolina’ blew up and now I’m faced with the situation that I’m gonna sing every song like that.”
People have already expressed their surprise after discovering what the reggae artist truly sounds like.
“Damn Shaggy really said ‘It wasn’t me’,” a TikTok user said.
A second said, “HOLD UP!!! Shaggy doesn’t have an accent.”
“Not Shaggy gaslighting us all these years,” another person joked.
Someone person asked, “So are we all just hearing Shaggy’s real voice for the first time?”
“Shaggy sounding like a regular dude before GTA is crazy,” said another startled reader.
Others were surprised to learn that Shaggy had previously served in the Marines.
The singer enrolled at the age of 18 in 1988, and two years later was sent to Kuwait as part of the 10th Marine Regiment’s Field Artillery Battery during the Persian Gulf War.
He is said to have departed the Marines in 1992, a year before the release of his breakthrough single, ‘Oh Carolina’.
“I was today years old when I found out Shaggy is a Marine,” one TikTok user wrote.
Well, there you have it, everyone.
