In the most recent developments in the human trafficking case against Bad Boy Entertainment CEO Sean “Diddy” Combs, attorneys for the singer’s former partner, Cassie Ventura, have criticized Diddy’s legal methods.

Last week, Diddy’s lawyers filed an application for a gag order after a witness spoke publicly about their grand jury testimony, which Cassie’s lawyer, Douglas H. Wigdor, has characterized as disingenuous.

Wigdor claims that, although Diddy wants to stifle witnesses and victims, his own family members have spoken out in his defense. In a declaration filed with the court on November 1, Wigdor highlighted the contrast, citing recent statements from Diddy’s son, Quincy, who termed the charges “devastating” on Instagram and vowed that “the truth will prevail.” Diddy’s mother also issued a statement through her lawyer, calling the claims a “public lynching” and “a narrative created out of lies.”

“These statements show Diddy’s attempt to muzzle everyone else is beyond ironic,” according to Wigdor. “If Diddy’s family can tell their side of the story, then Cassie and other accusers deserve the same right.”

In his letter to the court, Wigdor went on to address Diddy’s main attorney, Mark Agnifilo, who has called the case as a “racially motivated prosecution.” Wigdor stated that the gag order would prevent Cassie and anybody else who claims to have been abused by Diddy, regardless of their significance to the criminal case, from coming out about their experiences.

“It is not clear exactly whom Mr. Combs seeks to silence with his requested relief,” he said, “but his submission suggests that anyone who has claimed to have been a victim of Mr. Combs—regardless of whether their experience is relevant or connected to the criminal case at hand—must be prevented from speaking out about their allegations.”

Wigdor’s remarks come after a series of public statements by Diddy’s close associates, with Ventura’s legal team suggesting that Diddy’s actions are intended to limit negative storylines while giving his family free freedom to defend his image.
