Dame Maggie Smith was laid to rest in a private funeral service.

The British icon was laid to rest on Monday, after her family confirmed her death on September 27 at the age of 89.

Smith’s family and close friends gathered at Mortlake Crematorium in London to honor the Oscar-winning actress.

Guests reportedly paid respect to Smith by “belting out hymns” and giving “brilliant eulogies”.

According to the Daily Mail, the order of service honored the late actress with a childhood portrait on the front and a later image of her on the reverse with the words, “In loving memory of Dame Margaret Natalie Smith”.

Smith’s sons, Chris Larkin and Toby Stephens, issued an emotional statement announcing her death in September.

“It is with great sadness that we have to announce the death of Dame Maggie Smith,” they stated at the time. “She passed away peacefully in hospital early this morning, Friday 27th September.”

Larkin and Stephens said that their mother died surrounded by loved ones, saying, “She leaves two sons and five loving grandchildren who are devastated by the loss of their extraordinary mother and grandmother.”

On Thursday, the Harry Potter actor will be honored with a Broadway light-dimming ceremony. Theatre owners have announced that the marquee lights would be turned off at 6.45 p.m. in tribute of the great actress.

Smith began acting as a youngster and is most recognized for her appearances in the Harry Potter films, Downton Abbey, Sister Act, The most Exotic Marigold Hotel, and Gosford Park.
