Jelly Roll, a genre-defying country singer-songwriter-rapper, was undoubtedly one of the biggest victors at the CMT Music Awards on Sunday night (April 2).

The performer born Jason DeFord not only won three awards that night for his breakout hit “Son of a Sinner” (male breakthrough video of the year, male video of the year, and digital-first performance of the year), but he also gave one of the night’s most powerful performances (of the gospel-inspired “Need a Favor”) and generally charmed people in the audience and at home with his vigor and sincerity.

Unsurprisingly, “Sinner” and “Favor” have benefited from Jelly Roll’s successful Austin performance. In addition to selling a combined 3,300 copies over April 2-3, a 740% increase over his combined total the previous two days, “Sinner,” which peaked at No. 31 on the Billboard Hot 100 last October, notched 950,000 official on-demand U.S. streams on April 3 (the day after the awards), according to Luminate. Even more progress was made for “Favor,” which hasn’t cracked the Hot 100 but is currently No. 32 on the Country Airplay chart. Streams increased by 49% to 640,000 on April 3 and sales increased by over 5,500 during April 2-3, an increase of 848% from the two days prior combined.

Award shows may not have the same commercial impact they once did in 2023, but if Jelly Roll’s upcoming album Whitsitt Chapel, which is due out this June on BBR Music Group, performs even better than his previous album Ballads of the Broken from 2021, the CMT Awards will undoubtedly play a significant role in that success.

In addition to launching a week of high-profile TV shows using Leonard Cohen songs to make dramatic statements (with Succession following a few days later), the most recent episode of Ted Lasso also joyfully contributed to a spike in streams for a late-’90s alt-rock jam. Fastball’s 1999 single “Out of My Head” plays at the beginning of “4-5-1,” the third episode of the third and final season of the Apple TV+ soccer dramedy, as Colin (Billy Harris) awakens. Later in the episode, Ted (Jason Sudeikis) comes to a startling realization about his ex-wife, and Cohen’s “Everybody Knows” appropriately plays over the credits.

According to Luminate, between the day before the episode’s premiere date and the following day, daily U.S. official on-demand streams of “Out of My Head” increased by 63% to 30,000, and streams of “Everybody Knows” increased by 139% to over 15,000 during the same time frame. In the days that have followed, both streaming totals have slightly decreased, but given that the new season of Ted Lasso has already included songs by Lizzo, Bob Dylan, Beyoncé, and Eric B. & Rakim, anticipate further synchs from the new season to experience streaming increases in the following weeks.

Kanii, a 17-year-old bedroom producer from Washington, D.C., is quickly making a name for himself as an artist to watch. With just under 200,000 TikTok followers, he gained fame and amassed millions of streams for “Attachment,” a song he produced with co-producer Bossa and which included a wistful vocal over a clubbier version of Rihanna and Drake’s 2016 Hot 100 No. 1 single, “Work.” Kanii joined Masked Records, a Warner joint venture, as a result of the success of that song, but it appears that “I Know” will be his real breakthrough this year.

Released in early March, the hazy “I Know” was already off to a solid start. However, it totally erupted over TikTok with a remix by fellow adolescent collaborator pr1isvx, whose amplified Jersey cut of the song was formally picked up by Masked/Warner. According to Luminate, the song has grown by 7,122% in the three full weeks since its release from 81,000 official on-demand U.S. streams for the tracking week ending March 16 to over 5.8 million for the week ending March 30. The song is reportedly aiming for a Hot 100 debut in the coming weeks.
