Prepare to pay a little bit more to stream your preferred music. On Tuesday (April 25), Spotify CEO Daniel Ek made clear that he wanted to increase the cost of American memberships for the first time.
It ultimately boils down to those conversations, Ek added, “but I think we are ready to raise prices and I think we have the ability to do that.”
“We did raise prices in 46 different locations and markets last year, and even in those markets we were still outperforming,” claimed Ek. “I have a great feeling about our ability to gradually raise pricing, and we now have a ton of data to support that feeling. Being a less expensive supplier may have helped us a little bit, but it isn’t a major element of our strategy or something we’re considering.
Spotify presently counts over 515 million monthly active users, up 5% from the previous quarter, according to TechCrunch. The amount is also up 22% over the previous year. 210 million of those are premium subscribers.
