Sinéad O'Connor, A Singer, Has Died At The Age Of 56

Sinead O’Connor, an Irish singer, died on Wednesday at the age of 56. The revelation was confirmed by O’Connor’s family to The Irish Times and Raidió Telifis Éireann.

“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinéad,” said the statement. “Her family and friends are devastated and have requested privacy during this very difficult time.”

In 1987, O’Connor released her debut album, The Lion and the Cobra. The album received a Grammy nomination for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance.

Her sophomore album I Do Not Want What I Don’t Have, released in 1990, featured the breakthrough single “Nothing Compares 2 U.” The album was nominated for a Grammy for Best Alternative Music Performance, while the song was nominated for an MTV Video Music Award. In 1991, she boycotted the Grammy Awards.

O’Connor released ten albums in all, the most recent in 2014. In 2021, she released her memoir, Rememberings.

On Saturday Night Live on October 3, 1992, O’Connor concluded a performance of Bob Marley’s “War” by tearing up a picture of Pope John Paul II in front of the camera.

To protest the sexual abuse of minors in the Catholic Church, O’Connor declared, “Fight the real enemy.” O’Connor then converted to Islam.

O’Connor was extremely open about her mental health issues. O’Connor stated on the Oprah Winfrey Show in 2007 that she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, which was later denied by three doctors.

O’Connor was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder and borderline personality disorder, according to her recollections.

The singer was hospitalized in January 2022 following the loss of her son, Shane Lunny.

“It’s pointless to live without him.” I damage everything I touch. I just stayed because of him. And he’s now gone,” she wrote. “I’ve ruined my family.” My children are not interested in getting to know me.”

O’Connor has previously discussed her despair and suicide, including a statement she uploaded online in 2015 and a video she released online in 2017.
