TikTok Has Been Banned In Nepal Because The Software 'Disrupts Social Peace'

TikTok, a popular social networking app in Nepal, has been banned.

According to Aljazeera, the South Asian government has banned TikTok due to its dissemination of hate content.

Rekha Sharma, Nepal’s Minister for Communications and Information Technology, stated that the decision to prohibit TikTok was made during a cabinet meeting yesterday (November 13).

“Our social harmony, family structure and family relations are being disturbed by social media, by TikTok,” the minister went on to say.

“The decision to ban TikTok will be effective immediately,” she went on to say.

According to the South China Morning Post, Foreign Minister Narayan Prakash Saud stated that banning TikTok was “necessary” since it was “disrupting social harmony, goodwill, and the flow of indecent materials.”

According to the outlet, more than 1,600 TikTok-related cybercrime complaints have been reported in Nepal during the last four years.

While the Nepalese government first explored removing users from the platform to help curb dangerous information, the country’s home minister, Narayan Kaji Shrestha, told The New York Times that it would be difficult for officials to supervise this.

As a result, the authorities decided to outright prohibit the use of the site.

TikTok has yet to openly respond to the news.

Taranath Dahal, the founder of the Freedom Forum, has raised alarm about the decision, fearing that the government is ‘creating a controlled society.’

In recent years, a growing number of governments have taken action against the app.

TikTok and several other Chinese applications will be banned in India in June 2020, claiming data privacy and national security concerns.

Earlier this year, the Somali government put a ban on the app owing to the spread of false news and propaganda.

The US Congress has also introduced legislation that would impose a similar ban on the popular video-sharing app.

Senator Mark Warner’s measure would give the government the authority to prohibit foreign technologies and enterprises that pose a threat to national security.
