It looks like we might be getting closer to speaking with aliens.
The chances of aliens speaking English are probably quite low, even if films like Paul depict aliens speaking our language.
In light of this, researchers are hopeful that a previously fruitful dialogue between humans and whales will assist them in figuring out how to communicate with extraterrestrials.
Southeast Alaska in 2021 was the scene of a conversation between scientists and Twain, a humpback whale who has nothing to do with Shania.
Playing what’s known as a ‘contact call’ into the ocean for her to respond to, Twain spoke with researchers for an astounding twenty minutes.
Whales make contact calls to communicate with one another and let them know where they are, just like people say hello to one another.
During their conversation, Twain actually swam up to the researchers’ boat and circled the craft.
The identical contact call was made 36 times at various intervals by scientists, and Twain answered each time.
The SETI Institute has released a new article, two years after the successful experiment, that examines how the chat with Mark Twain may be utilized as “a tool for detecting and exploring nonhuman intelligence.”
Additionally, the 2021 study on whale communication was funded by SETI.
According to a press release, Dr. Brenda McCowan of U.C. Davis, the study’s principal author, “we believe this is the first such communicative exchange between humans and humpback whales in the humpback ‘language’.”
“An important assumption of the search for extraterrestrial intelligence is that extraterrestrials will be interested in making contact and so target human receivers,” stated Dr. Laurance Doyle of the SETI Institute, who was also a co-author on the article.
“This important assumption is certainly supported by the behavior of humpback whales.”
In an interview with Business Insider, he continued to say that if aliens are truly attempting to contact us, we can miss them if we are unaware of what to watch out for.
But it could also assist scientists in identifying intelligence signals from space by employing intelligence filters similar to the ones used to communicate with Mark Twain.
“There are diverse intelligences on this planet, and by studying them, we can better understand what an alien intelligence might be like, because they’re not going to be exactly like ours,” said Dr. McCowan.
The fundamental premise of the hypothesis is that aliens are reaching out to us, and if they share our level of intelligence, there’s a strong probability they’re as interested in us as we are in them.
