Taylor Swift remains at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 this week with The Tortured Poets Department.
The title debuted at the top of the albums chart in the United States 12 frames ago, and it hasn’t moved down since.
While Swift is focused on her latest full-length album, her fans in the United States aren’t just listening to it. They’ve continued to stream and buy the majority of her releases, and by doing so, they’ve helped one of her most successful albums become history.
Swift’s 1989 album has officially spent 500 weeks on the Billboard 200. That’s an unusual accomplishment, with only a few titles in U.S. history remaining among the most-consumed albums in the country for so long. Swift’s pop hit is the first to accomplish so, and it propels her into the ranks of two of the most successful women in the music industry.
According to Billboard, 1989 is only the third female album to reach 500 weeks on the Billboard 200. Only Adele and Lana Del Rey have achieved the same result.
Adele’s 21 is still the longest-charting female album. Her global bestseller has spent 605 weeks in the Billboard 200, yet it is not on the list this time around.
Del Rey’s Born to Die is the next longest-running winner on the Billboard 200 among female stars. That set managed to secure a spot on the list for 544 frames. Unlike 21, Born to Die is still running this time around.
When all artists are considered, the number of names that have achieved at least one 500-week chart position grows dramatically. Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon continues to hold the record for the most time spent on the Billboard 200. That pioneering rock endeavor is 10 weeks away from reaching 1,000 frames on the list.
